Holiday Cheer

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… Thanksgiving has come and gone, and it’s officially the Christmas season! I love this time of the year. I love Christmas decorations, drinking peppermint hot chocolate, listening to Christmas music, curling up under a cozy blanket and looking at the Christmas tree, and just the general feeling of joy and happiness that’s in the air this time of year. It’s hard to not smile during the entire month of December. Everyone is cheerful and a spirit of celebration permeates the air. Downtown Princeton looks especially charming during the Christmas season. The Friday after Thanksgiving there was a Christmas tree lighting ceremony downtown, and Erik and I walked around the area for a bit before popping in to a bar and warming up with some festive cocktails. We went back again during the day last Saturday, to enjoy the decorations without such a large crowd of people and a sharp chill in the air. Pretty much all the shops and restaurants downtown have wreaths and lights hanging from their doorways, and the Nassau Inn in the center of downtown Princeton is extra festive with nutcrackers outside. We had a great afternoon walking around, sipping hot drinks (a mocha for him and a London Fog for me), and taking in the festivities. It was a lovely way to kick off the holiday season.

To celebrate the start of the Christmas season, I broke out some of my more festive clothing pieces. I’m in love with this green topcoat. J. Crew released it last year and I lusted over it for months, but since I was living in North Carolina at the time, it didn’t make sense to purchase a statement coat. There just aren’t enough winter days in the South where it’s cold enough for a coat to justify buying a fun statement coat that doesn’t work with every outfit. When I saw that J. Crew was releasing it again this year, I immediately added it to my online shopping cart. Winter coat season starts a solid month and a half earlier in New Jersey than it does in the South, and continues until later in the spring, so I had no problem justifying my purchase now! And I’m so glad I purchased it! The hints of white, red, and gold intermixed with the green tweed creates a beautiful color scheme, and the texture is so cozy and soft. It’s not a super heavy coat, it’s great for fall and mild winter days. I love the slightly menswear inspired fit of the coat, it hangs a little loose so it’s easy to wear a thick sweater underneath. I was so excited to pair this coat with my red velvet bag. The red of the bag really brought out the hints of red in the tweed of the coat. The red velvet bag just feels like Christmas. The texture and the color were built for this time of year. I will definitely be getting as much use out of this bag as I can for the next month and a half. The velvet feels so luxurious, and it’s fits more stuff inside than I expected! I decided to keep the rest of my outfit pretty neutral so that the coat and the bag would really be the stars of the show. I’m so excited for the upcoming month of Christmas fashion!
